Assignment 19: Impressions and possible suggestions

Overall, the course was really enjoyable. I won't lie, I thought this course was going to be boring the first day of class, but it turned out to be my favorite course this semester. LOTS of news things I learned, AND if it was not enough it directly relates to two of my favorite hobbies: video games and animes. The lectures were flawless and the visual aids on the course slides really helped. If I were to make suggestions to this course to improve it a bit, I would say the number ONE THING TO CHANGE ARE THOSE DAMN CURTAINS. I'm kidding :D. However, and even though it is not your fault, this class relies so much on visual aids, pictures and videos that lighting on the classroom and class projectors are of utmost importance. Hence, I think the administration should be talked with so that an appropriate classroom with good (at least working) material is provided as well as good lighting. These kinds of problems could have an impact of the schedule of the class by delaying it Other than that, the overall course was very well taught and the content itself was really interesting.

Assignment 18: Demo #2 Similarity and Differences Between Cartoons and Anime

I could not find a way to generate the Prezi presenation into a JPEG file. Here is the direct link of the Prezi presentation : http://prezi.com/3ips1igfy6n6/similarity-and-differences-between-cartoons-and-anime-visual-communication-demo-2/

The 1st video shown is a short clip from cartoon classic Tom and Jerry : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-T2-rJfeaFM

The 2nd video shown is the Second episode of one of the best (if not the best) animes out there, Death note: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ps7o7VOYajs

16.A Picture of Morocco

A chose this picture of a ashtray because it is hand made, also because it kind of reminds me of the moroccan culture with all these beautiful shapes and colors painted around it. I also didn't find any of these ashtrays in other countries like France or Spain, which means it represents Morocco in a way.

15.Signifier 2

Again, same thing as cigarettes, when I see a bottle of water, i automatically think of drinking water. This is because when i was young, my parents always stressed out to me that I had to drink at least 1.5 liters of water a day in order to stay healthy.

14.Signifier 1

I noticed a few weeks ago, when i see a package of cigarettes, i automatically want to smoke, same thing when i see someone smoke.

13.Branded!

I didn't notice it until today, most of my clothes are GAP products. I'm definitly branded, probably because in my subconscious, GAP means Gamer And Proud.

12.Goal

To back up my mission statement, I need to completely focus on my studies, work hard, make a strict, weekly schedule in order to not excessively mess around with video games, clubs and parties. Finally, and probably one of the most important goals i have is to get rid of my procrastination which has really becom more of an illness than a problem.

11.Mission Statement

As the youngest member of a family consisting of 4 children who are all already working except me and whose parents are already old, i strive to earn my diploma in Al Akhawayn University without making any mistakes along the long road that is graduation, not only to have a career and foresee a bright career, but most importantly to make my parents proud. (And relieved of all financial duty to be completely honest)

10.Figure/Ground Relationship

For this post, I used the same picture as the one on Post number 7 because the unified swabs forming letters on top of the ground reflect quite well the figure/ground relationship, even when proximity is involved.

9.Closure

In this picture, i tried to form a complete square using napkins. Then, I cut some of them to see if i still see the picture as a square, which i still do. I wanted to use real objects to do this instead of creating one via paint/computer to see if the effect is the same, which it is.

8.Uniform Connectedness

Again, i used swabs to illustrate how easy we can seperate in our minds these swabs into 3 seperate groups because of the difference in color, even though they are all near each other.

7.Proximity

In this picture, i used swabs to show how, when put together, they can form uniform letters when adjusted and how each group when seperated can make a word.

6.Backlighting

This picture pretty much shows the backlighting effect with reflections of light behind and around the bottle.

Similarity-5

In this image, the human sees two colors, but before noticing the second color, he follows the dots path of the primary color, here represented by the light blue dots, then notices that there is another path, represented by the solid blue dots, hence the law of continuity, where the brain follows what "feels right" before anything else.

Depth-4

In this picture, we can see 3 major depth cues: the first one is represented by the people in the front, the second one is represented by the left buildings that take the "middle-center" of the painted area, and finally the third one is the ever-lasting sea that constitutes the "background" of the picture

Plane-3

There are 2 reasons why a choose the Black Hole as a point image. The first one is because, as a definition, a point is also a dot because it has dimensions. Second, The hole is basically a point that instantly draws attention when seen on a picture like this one, and all the image revolves around the point.

Color-2

This is a Triadic color scheme image.
The colors are Red, Blue, and Yellow, representing the Triadic scheme of the color patterns.

Lighting-1

For this assignement, I chose this particular image because it can show how a light, even far away in the background, can drastically make the front of the photo so meaningful and beautiful. It also brings a sens of mystery because we cannot really be certain as to whether the lake is covered in mud or it froze and parts of it are melting, leaving clear sights to water. All this said mystery is created because of the poor lighting of the lake, making it a choice for people to choose what season this picture represents depending on their mood and emotions: autumn/summer (mud), or winter/fall (ice). Finally, the bright sight on the background, taking all the lighting for itself, can mean many things depending on who sees it, I personnally see it as a distant heaven that can only be reachable by walking the tortuous path of the lake.
